My Story
My name is Nina Neal; I founded Purple Tower Domestic Violence of Atlanta out of both purpose and pain.
In 2017, My sister Karlea Renee Thomas passed away due to domestic violence. The Abuser Strangle her and left her Hanging for her 12-year-old daughter to find her. I never knew this type of pain until it happened in my family. My journey toward creating this organization began long before the doors opened. From 2018- 2019, I felt a deep calling to make a difference, I stated having awareness events in the Community, I want to thank the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church and Johnathan Hart, those two people allowed me to have my event at their location for little to nothing. My team and I would gather the community to speak to those who has witness the pain and silence surrounding domestic violence. That showed me how powerful in can be when a community comes together to lift survivors up with compassion and dignity. That small act of kindness grew into something bigger. I started getting 50-75 emails, phone call, combined from victims trying to escape domestic violence. So, in February 2020 the doors came open at that time there we 25 women and children housed there. Domestic Violence was increasing due to covid, I felt the need to find a bigger location over time we have housed over 127 women and children, the elder, and several men facing abuse. My mom the Chief Operating Officer Joya Neal and family I housed these women with our own money. We became an organized non-profit Organization on February 21, 2024. I want to especially thank the community and the woman at purple tower for helping me get here. Together we are creating more than a shelter - we are building a foundation for freedom, healing, and new beginnings.
